Contributory Parent visa (Subclass 143)
The 143 visa allows parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia permanently.
At least half of the applicant’s children must live in Australia or the applicant must have more children living in Australia than in any other country.
SPONSOR
You must be sponsored. Usually, this will be your child who must be:
- 18 years old or older
- A settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
BALANCE OF FAMILY TEST
- At least half of your children live permanently in Australia, or
- More of your children live permanently in Australia than in any other country
You do not have to meet the BoFT If:
- You hold a Subclass 173 Temporary Contributory Parent Visa or, your subclass 173 ended in the 28 days immediately before you apply for this is or,
- your subclass 884 visa ended more than 28 days before you apply for this visa, but you can show compassionate and compelling reasons to be considered to still hold the visa.

Aged and Sponsored (Temporary) Parent Visa
Aged Parent Visa (subclass 804)
The Subclass 804 aged parent visa allows older parents to move to Australia. The Subclass 804 aged parent visa allows older parents to move to Australia if more of their children live in Australia than any other country.
Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804) holders can:
- Live in Australia as a permanent resident
- Sponsor eligible relatives to come to Australia
- Get access to Medicare
- Apply for Australian citizenship (if eligible)
Applying for an Aged Parent (Subclass 804) Visa
To be eligible to apply for an aged parent Subclass 804 visa, you must meet the below criteria
- Be sponsored by your child or a relative
- Be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia
Including family members
You may be able to include immediate family in your application when you apply.
Family members who are being included in the application must meet the health and character requirements. Family members who are not coming to Australia may also have to meet the health and character requirements.
Subclass 870 Sponsored Parent Visa (Temporary)
The Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870) provides parents with a new pathway to temporarily reunite with their children and grandchildren in Australia.
The visa allows parents to stay in Australia for up to five years at a time.
Sponsorship Applications
In March 2019, Minister Coleman announced that sponsorship applications to sponsor a parent for a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa will be open from 17 April 2019.
Visa Applications
After a sponsorship application has been approved, a sponsored parent may apply for a Temporary Sponsored Parent visa. Applications for the visa are intended to open from 1 July 2019
Benefits of this visa
The visa allows parents to remain in Australia for a longer period of time, up to five years at a time without departing and ten years in total. A parent must leave Australia for at least 90 days before applying for another Sponsored Parent visa (Subclass 870).
It provides an alternative option to Visitor visas which only allow shorter periods of stay. Parents are still eligible to apply for Visitor visas and/or permanent Parent visas.
